Swami’s message on Gurupurnima, 19 July 2016

Blessed Souls

Gurave sarva lokanam, bhishaje bhava roginam,
Nidhaye sarva vidhyanam, Dakshinamurthaye namaha.

The Guru is the basis of all knowledge. The merciful Guru has the solution to all our illness and maladies. That Guru is Dakshinamoorthy. Such a Guru will cleanse all our sins and lead us on the right path of Dharma, granting eternal and beautiful peace.

Vyasa Jayanthi or Guru Purnima is the sacred and blessed day when we remember that great Guru who held our hands to take us to God.

This special day is revered by all people who follow Sanatana Dharma (the Path of the Eternal Truth). People pay respect to the Great Sage Vyasa Maharshi and also to their own Guru who have helped in their spiritual upliftment and get blessings from them. Sage Vyasa Maharshi compiled the Vedas and composed the 18 Puranas of this India. He is the one who held our hands and took us to higher realms from earthly existence. Thereby he enlightened the path by which we can attain the highest goal of human life and the path to salvation or Mukti.

I pray that each one of you will attain fulfilment on this divine day. God is always standing beside us to elevate us, for us to merge in him and thereby attain bliss. We search for peace in the external world but the peace we are in search of is in fact within us. We must identify with this peace, realise this truth and embrace God residing within us. We will be able to experience bliss only when we identify ourselves with God that resides within us.

Each suffering and pain we undergo may contribute for us to be closer to God. Nama Smarana (contemplation on God’s name) is very important. All our efforts should be towards complete union with God and Namajapa (reciting the Name by which each person invokes the one God) is the easiest way for it. Constant Namajapa is the strongest link that binds a devotee to the Lord. One becomes close to the Lord through Namajapa and this enables us to experience a universal vision by which we can see God in every living and nonliving things. May you all attain this blissful state. May you all be happy and content on this special day. May you attain the blessings of your Guru. If you haven’t found your Guru, get the blessings of your parents by showing your respect to them. Mata Pita Guru Daivam (your parents are your first Guru).

The guru that you seek is in reality within yourself. We are all instruments in the hands of the divine Guru. Guru is the all-comprehensive reality that enlightens all who come in contact with Him. Always chant: Om Namah Shivaya or Om Sri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram. These mantras will take us from darkness (spiritual ignorance) to light. The Guru comes to the earth to remove all our worldly maladies and gives us happiness, joy and peace. The only prayer of a Bhakta (person who chooses the yogic path of Devotion) to God should be: “Oh God, Keep thy sweet name forever on my lips! May my heart be ever filled with Prema (unconditional divine love)! Let our heart be filled with this supreme joy. I am thine forever and ever.” Let us exclaim with rapture when we chant Om Namah Shivaya.

The Guru is not someone who merely finds our faults. He is someone who always gives us opportunities to tread on the right path. We must surrender with dedication and devotion to the divine Master’s Lotus feet. On this day of Vyasa Purnima, we must remember our spiritual Guru and inner Guru. This remembrance brings us more joy and happiness. When we focus on these things, the spiritual experience will give us bliss and harmony.

On this Guru Purnima day may God grant everyone joy, peace, happiness and harmony. Vyasa Maharshi gave us abundant knowledge through the Vedas, Puranas and Itihasas. May this knowledge enlighten us, fill us with compassion and lead us to salvation.

Through daily practice and sadhana as prescribed by the Guru we get inner peace. May all in this world get the spiritual fulfilment that they seek.

I surrender myself at the Lotus feet of the Divine Guru. May He lead us all from darkness to light.

Asatoma sadgamaya
tamaso ma jyotirgamaya
mrtyorma amrtam gamaya

From ignorance, lead us to truth;
From darkness, lead us to light;
From death, lead us to immortality
Om peace, peace, peace

With love and blessings,
Swami Atmachaithanya
